You can hide the WiFi network’s name, but you can’t hide the signal. Trying to hide your WiFi would only pique the curiosity of a networking specialist (AKA, hacker) and mark that signal as a target, in my view. While hiding the network name might give someone some sense of (false) comfort, it likely would do little to prevent a knowledgeable hacker’s efforts. In my view, it is better to one in a crowd that to single yourself out by trying to hide where it comes to Wi-Fi networks. But, this subject could be debated on several levels. Thanks for the piece.

Charles, you are correct. When I use my laptop in a public place I use my phone’s hot spot and hook up to that which does have the ability to hide its ssid. I feel safer because I assume any hackers are already targeting the free wireless users and hiding mine while not 100% foolproof it is much safer. If anyone is going to use a public wi-fi they should always use a VPN. Thanks for the comment.

That would be neat, but till someone changes the way networking is managed at the design level???
