Yes indeed those power bars with surge protection can fail after time and you have no way of knowing when the protection is gone. I invested in a wall outlet with surge protection ages ago and it came with an alarm function when the unit was not providing protection. Only required replacing once (not certain if it is still being sold).

As a user and promoter of UPS units (APC brand being number 1), hope you will pick up this practice yourself and advise others of the benefits a UPS, Mindblower!
